Logan-Hocking Middle

The Logan-Hocking Middle School (LHMS) Envirothon Teams participated in the Multi-County Envirothon competition on Wednesday, March 29, 2006. The theme for this years competition was “Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate.” Schools competing in the Envirothon came from Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Jackson, St. Peter & Paul, Federal Hocking, Vinton, and Alexander counties.
The competition was held at the Sportsman’s Club in Athens County. School teams competed in groups of five. Middle school and senior high teams competed separately. The competition consisted of an exam that pertained to wildlife, forestry, aquatics, land & soil, and environmental issues. Over 200 students attended the competition. LHMS had five teams representing Logan. All five teams placed in the top ten. The Advisor for the LHMS Envirothon Team was Melissa Hilliard, 8th Grade Science Teacher.
The First Place team in the Jr. High division was the Logan Hocking "Mingo" Team. Team members are (front row left-right), Shaylyn Allen, Kristy Klingenberg, and Rebekah Young, (back row) Kevin Smith and Jeff Dietz.
The LHMS Envirothon teams would like to take this opportunity to thank our guest speakers for conducting meetings and for helping with preparation for the competition:
• Kelly Capuzzi from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
• Pat Quakenbush from Ohio Department of Natural Resources, (ODNR)
• Clay Meyer from the Logan Future Farmers of America (FFA)
• Jason Garey from the Hocking County Soil and Water (HSWC)
The guest speaker for the day was Bob Scott Placier from Hocking College. Bob discussed how the changing climates are affecting the migratory patterns of the birds of Ohio and surrounding areas.
